Barbara A. Scanlon, age 90, of Fairfield, beloved wife of the late James Bernard Scanlon, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, March 23, 2021.  Born on August 11, 1930 in Flushing, New York, the daughter of the late Pierre and Catherine Fonk. Barbara was a lifelong New Yorker but had been an area resident for the last 15 years.

Following graduation from Bayside High School, Barbara worked in New York City until meeting her beloved husband, James. Barabra and James began their life together in Pensacola, Florida where James was stationed with the Air Force. They eventually moved back to New York and settled on Long Island to raise their family.  Barbara had a long career in the Provost office at Stony Brook University. She loved working in the academic environment and thoroughly enjoyed being surrounded by and getting to know many of the students.

Barbara had many diverse interests. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed keeping abreast of all current events. Barbara was an avid traveler; she traveled the world learning different histories, and cultures but particularly enjoyed meeting the local people.  She loved all things outdoors, she enjoyed getting her hands dirty in the garden and bird watching. The beach was a favorite spot for Barbara, whether it was taking a long swim or catching a beautiful sunset, Barbara was happy at the beach.  Barbara loved animals of all kinds and never hesitated to take in and care for strays.

Barbara was a loyal friend and blessed with a wide circle of dear friends. Barbara adored her grandchildren children; she was their biggest cheerleader and involved in a special way in each of their lives. Barbara’s deep Catholic faith was her foundation and her greatest source of strength, peace and hope.

Barbara is survived by four beloved children, James Bernard Scanlon and his wife Aya of Walnut Creek, CA, Priscilla M. Scanlon of Fairfield, Katherine E. (Kitty) Fiol and her husband Maurice of Fairfield and Michael J. Scanlon and his wife Lisa of Hermosa Beach, CA; six cherished grandchildren, Molly, Patrick, Aidan, Claire, Cristina and Devin.  She was predeceased by two sisters, Helen and Madeline.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Pius X Church, Fairfield.  Interment will be in Calverton National Cemetery, New York.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Barbara’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 200 Executive Blvd., Suite 4B, Southington, CT 06489.
